 | ASUS N61JQ-X1 16-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)
Amazing value! -- 2010-03-06 Keyboard:
Chiclet keyboard feels nice, the large keys and a number pad are great! When I ordered this laptop I was worried I would get the UK keyboard layout with the large return key and the backslash key in a inconvenient location. When I received the laptop I was pleased to find that it was the standard US keyboard layout with large enter, backspace, shift, and control keys which is a nice change from other laptop keyboards that have smaller keys.
Color:
The page says the color is dark brown but appears black under almost all conditions, a plus in my book. I had to shine the back with an LED flashlight for it to appear brown. I haven't taken outside in direct sunlight but it may appear more brown outside.
Build quality:
I would rate this a medium. It shouldn't break under normal use but it doesn't look as sturdy as some others. Very bright white LEDs on both sides of the laptop blink when in standy mode or when powered on make the laptop distracting in a darker room. I like the quiet fan volume. Even the DVD drive is fairly quiet. Screen hinges look nice and shouldn't break easily.
Performance:
Windows 7 boots fast! Windows Experience Index of 5.9. Runs most all modern games on high quality. Great performance for the price.
Ports:
Aside from the standard ports, this laptop has an HDMI port with audio out, one USB 3.0 connector, an eSATA connector!
Bundled software:
Comes with standard game demos, Office 2007 trial, and various ASUS utilities. Nothing special but not nearly enough to be considered bloat-ware. Comes with Windows 7 and driver re-install disc as well as recovery disc maker software.
Audio:
Great sound quality for laptop speakers. No noticeable distortion even at high volume!
Battery life:
Mediocre, I average about 2 hours in power saving mode. But what do you expect from a gaming laptop with an i7 processor? Get a netbook if you want battery life :)
Warranty:
Great warranty, came with one free year of accidental damage protection.
In-Depth Review -- 2010-03-06 Just got this. Looked at it for a few days on [...] to get detailed specs and customer reviews before purchasing. I only bought it on amazon because the next day shipping was cheaper (about $[...]) and the computer itself was $[...] less on amazon.
Haven't pushed the pedal to the metal as far as ram, HDD, and CPU go. There is an overclocking speed (called Turbo Boost) that is automatic. With windows 7 (instaleld) the Turbo Boost app lets you see the CPU ramping up. It shows that the CPU rutinely goes up to 2.6 Ghz when opening an application (not very intensive work) so I am not sure how accurate the gadget is, but we'll see. When compared to what else is out there, this coputer has much more for your money and is actually cheaper than many laptops with less power/graphics capability/coolness. Look at the prices at Best Buy for an Core i3 laptop. They are nearly $1000 and don't have as much ram, video memory, or upgrade potential. This is a Core i7, much more powerful and is less than alot of the laptops out there. Plus, Asus has a 1 year accidental warranty. Tops!
Pros:
-Amazon said it would be Brown, mine was black when I got it. Brown is ugly anyway!
- You can create a recovery DVD to fix everything in the event you scrw something up. Also, has a bootup recovery option built in, so even if you don;t have the disks, it can be recovered.
- 1 year replacement/repair "i dropped it in a pool" warranty.
-Shipping. For the price of the computer, get the 30.00 next day. I order by 3:00PM on thursday and had the computer booted up at 3:15PM friday.
-Nice looking computer. Great sound. Great price. (You can get a lesser model without the i7 CPU from Best Buy for 999.00)
-USB 3.0 is nice touch. Cool touchpad with "gesture" recognition.
-I like the screen. The resolution is said to be a little low/poor for the machine, but I do not yet find it to be a problem. You can zoom in and out using the touchpad and gestureing, so if the icons look to big/small, you can change it up without messing with screen resolution. Basically, you can keep it in 1377x768 mode. HD screen looks good to me. Bright too.
-HDMI output! You can hook this thing up to your big ass HD flat screen.
- With Windows 7, some "gadgets" aka iphone style "apps" that can be installed to the desktop require 32bit. This computer has the 64bit Windows 7 so you have to do some playin around to get those gadgets to work. Pandora is one of those. However, you can have a applet for Pandor Radio on the desktop without needing an open internet explorer window. Cool!
- POwer saving one-touch button. NOt sure how effcient it is yet.
- So far, Windows 7 is not that bad. Yet. :)
CONS:
- A lot of "bloatware" on this baby. You have to sort throught it all and see what you like/don;t like and uninstall whatever you can live without.
- At initial boot up, 80 processes running! Ouch. 33% of RAM in use. That's over a Gig. Trim down the fat and you should be good.
-The first time I launched the "See how cool this Asus computer is" demo, I needed to lower the volume. Whn I did so, the computer locked up, blaring a annoying sound. I had to hold th epower button for 4 sec to turn off manually. Not cool. After that though, all seems cool.
- The keyboard is a little cheap, has some play to it. Go to Best BUy and type on one of their floor models to see if it is bad for you or not. Not a deal breaker for me, but kinda lame. The "full size keyboard is not true, it is laptop sized with a number padd on the right. The arrow keys (if you play games or use spreadsheets) are small and you can easily miss them and hit the 0 or control key.
Cool!
- A lot of Asus "this and that" programs to deal with. I uninstalled half of them.
BOTTOM LINE:
Buy it. Remove what you don't like. Great deal. If you were going to spend 800, drop an extra 2 bills and get this one. If you were going to spend 1200, save you money and get yourself a case for this one once you buy it.

 | ASUS UL30A-X5 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop - 12 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Great Budget Laptop for People on the Go -- 2010-03-09 This laptop has been amazing so far, great design, portable, excellent display, awesome battery life, it was exactly what i was looking for.
When you first get this thing and power it up you will notice that it really doesn't come with a lot of bloatware. Most of it is Asus Utilities that help make using it easier. I uninstalled most of the stuff i didn't need and the rest really didn't take up too much memory to run. One thing that bugged me though was the free trial of Microsoft Office without a serial key. It would have been nice to have that. I never really used the ExpressGate so I can't comment on that. I would recommend deleting the huge empty partition and just merging it into the main Windows one.
There are only a couple cons to this laptop. First is the spacebar, sometimes if you hit it near the edge it wont read it. Second is the mouse button. For some strange reason it is getting scratched up in the same spot and is ruining the finish on it. I have no idea what could be causing it, but its a minor detail.
Pros:
Great battery, averaged around 6-8 hours with fairly heavy use.
Great display and graphics, I have the screen to almost minimum brightness and its still crisp
Cool design, both visually and thermally, very lightweight
Trackpad, the different actions you can make with just the pad are cool, it definitely saves a lot of time.
Keyboard, it seems to be the perfect size for most hands.
Cons:
Sometimes it can act a little squirrelly, i think thats more the OS fault.
Trackpad, It can be really touchy, I would STRONGLY recommend manually updating the drivers for this, Windows Update seems to miss it.
Random Flex on the keyboard surface, more of a nuisance than a problem though.
Missing or broken drivers, you would think all the drivers would be up to date but oh well, again just annoying.
Overall I would recommend this laptop, do make sure to manually update all the nessecary drivers off of the Asus website, it will fix the webcam issue and the trackpad issue.
Replaced my desktop with Windows 7 and mobility -- 2010-03-04 I'm very pleased with Asus and this particular product. Great combination of performance, battery life, weight and price. Everything I had working with my desktop (3 different printers from hP and Canon) were easily made to work with this notebook running Windows 7 except the Twain-32 driver (scanner). There are many options for most scanners on the market today for upgrades with either s/w or h/w so this is not an issue. Back to the UL30A....I love the performance button above/left of the keyboard which instantly selects between high performance and low power modes (or something in between). The 13 inch screen is beautiful. Amazon shipped this product very quickly (I ordered two - one for my daughter in college and one for myself). I called ASUS to get an updated address where to send the Accidental Damage Warranty registration; customer service answered the phone rather quickly and gave me the new USPS address and a web site where I could register the ADW electronically.

 | ASUS UL30Vt-A1 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Silver Laptop - 12 Hours of Battery Life
Good thin notebook -- 2010-03-10 I have been using this notebook for some weeks now and I have found it to be a great replacement for my netbook. In the past I would carry around 15-17inch notebooks then about one and half years ago I got a 9 inch netbook to use when I wanted something that was light, smaller and easy to use. Then after using the netbook for about 6 months I tried to use it as my main PC. There were only two issues that I found that were bothersome was the speed of the CPU and screen resolution. With the ASUS UL30Vt I have found one that is light, fast, and has a better screen resolution. The ability to switch between using the Intel graphics and the NVIDIA graphics was a plus. I have yet to find a need to switch the notebook to Turbo mode because I am not a gamer (I have better things to do with my life, despite my son being a big gamer). I have found that I can get more than a full day's usage without needing to be connected to a power source; that equates to about 8+ hours. I would have be surfing the web and doing some heavy computing. The full size key board did take a day to get use to after being on the netbook's small key board. Unlike others, I have not really found the one button for the mouse to be much of an issue. Having the built-in Bluetooth was a big plus along with being able to upgrade the RAM to 8G (if I ever decide to). I would have given this product a higher rating if it had been an 11.3 inch because that is what I really wanted for my replacement of the netbook. I have yet to fly with this notebook but I expect it to preform well there (we'll see when the guy in the seat in front of me leans all the way back). I am looking for a bag to carry this notebook in and I have not find the prefect one yet, so i'll use my old one from the 15 inch days for now.
Nice laptop, but HDMI port doesn't work on mine -- 2010-03-05 As other customers commented, this is a very nice laptop, I would give it 5 Stars if its HDMI port worked. Amazon did excellent job on very quick shipping. The first shipment delivered on the next day. I tested everything, it worked very well except HDMI Port: the HDMI Port didn't work on my home 46" Sharp LCD TV. Then I tested HDMI on two monitors in my office (while other laptop with HDMI works well), it didn't work either. I called Asus tech support, they couldn't get it work either. They issued me RMA and need to repair it. I didn't want a brand-new laptop to be repaired, so I returned it to Amazon and got a replacement the next day - Again, Amazon did excellent job and this is why I always shop on Amazon as my first electronic supplier.
Guess what, the HDMI Port on the new replacement laptop again doesn't work on my home TV and on monitors in my office while a HP laptop with HDMI Port works very well. I don't want to return it to Amazon again because I should leave some profits to Amazon. I guess either I have bad luck on this Asus laptop or such Asus model laptops have the same problem.
Fortunately, I am not going to use its HDMI Port anyway because its resolution is low. I got a media player supporting 1080p for my home TV and Projector. While in office, I don't need HDMI Port at all. Therefore, I don't really care about its HDMI Port because it is still a good laptop without working HDMI Port for its price.
If you do need to use HDMI Port, you need to test it immediately when it is delivered to you. I wish this would help you to get max value from your purchase!

 | ASUS UL20A-A1 Thin and Light 12.1-Inch Silver Laptop - 7.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Good budget ultra-thin laptop -- 2010-03-09 I bought this for my wife as her own laptop. She surfs the net, does light (picnik) photo editing, and most importantly watches many of her TV shows (Lost, Survivor, Project Runway, Real housewives..) on a laptop. I chose this over a classic netbook because of the video watching. Admittedly I don't have much experience with netbooks and ultralights. But I didn't want to take the chance of choppy video. Overall this laptop is great for its lightness and Windows 7 seems to be pretty excellent (I like XP, not a huge fan of Vista). The video watching is pretty good. I would have rated this with 5 stars if full-screen video wasn't a bit shaky.
Great little notebook -- 2010-03-08 I bought this notebook about a month and a half ago and I love it. It's small, easy to carry, fast and it looks very slick. I upgraded the RAM to 4GB, a very easy process, just open the back and pop an extra 2GB stick into the empty slot (Just make sure you push them all the way into the slot). I've been getting about 5-6 hours of battery life in battery saving mode and that has been more then enough to last me between chances to plug it in. I'm a computer science major and I have been using this laptop to do some programming, compiling and even testing of my project, which involves running Starcraft, which this machine can handle just fine. With the RAM upgrade multitasking is very smooth, its not uncommon for me to have 8+ different programs open when I am writing code and this notebook can handle it. I've also been using this notebook to play movies on my housemate's projector, full HD movie playback without skipping, great quality. What else needs to be said? if you are looking for something faster then a netbook and only a little larger then this is the machine for you.

 | ASUS U50Vg-AM1 Thin and Light 15.6-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Great Laptop annoying display -- 2010-02-07 I like this laptop. Decent battery life, good performance and an above average amount of storage space on the harddrive. Consumer reports also ranks this as the #2 best laptop to get right now.
I have three annoyances with this laptop.
Display:
1. This might be personal preference but the display is great for widescreen but the height of the display is not proportional to the width (1366X768). Consequently, the documents will not automatically fit to the screen unless you tweak the document. Additionally, the display almost washes out the screen in white. This might be a quirk or I might be spoiled on my Mac but the brightness and lack of contrast is sort of annoying.
2. The VGA port does not have screws to tightly affix the vga cable to the laptop. I like to use multiple monitors.
Touchpad:
3. The touchpad buttons take a lot of getting used to.
Software:
4. It lacks a full copy of MS Office or Trend Antivirus.
VERY NICE FOR THE PRICE -- 2010-01-30 I have owned 4 laptops over the last 8 years, 1st one was an IBM, last 3 were HP. The last one was an HP dv9000, and for the most part was ok
after i rolled it back too windows xp, so i have no idea how similar win 7 is too vista, 7 seems a little cartoony but i will get used too it.
My old Hp had an amd turion 1.6 GHz dual core processor, 2 gigs of ram, 1mb cache, 120gb hd, and an nvidia geforce go 6150 video card, with no dedicated memory. I am not a hardcore gamer, but do enjoy playing WOW, sim city, madden nfl, fifa, couple 1st person shooters, and my HP was just killing me everything was choppy
and lagged. so far for the few hours that i have been using the asus i am impressed with the performance.
the keyboard is very nice, feels good, without too much noise. the touch pad works and feels great also.
The laptop boots up fast and runs real quiet even when i'm playing WOW, i don't hear it buzzing or crackling.
not sure how long the battery lasts, but for me that is not a big deal.
The color is a black metallic with blue, i thought it was going too be just a gloss black, but the metallic looks very sharp as far as i care.
wish the screen had a higher resolution but no biggie. and the finger prints, also no big deal for me.
all in all for the price i am very happy with what i got. great warranty, nice performance, looks great and feels like good quality, didn't have a ton of bloatware like my last HP, which will save you time uninstalling garbage. My desktop has an asus motherboard,(never an issue) and my son owns one of their gaming laptops, for about 8 months now (he pushes it atleast 4-7 hours gaming a day)still holding strong never a crash. customer service is excellent, and unless something major happens in the coming months, from my personal asus experiences i think i will keep buying their laptops. so far no complaints.

 | ASUS UL30A-A2 Thin and Light 13-3-Inch Silver Laptop - 12 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)
great screen, hd's rubbish, fairly heavy, quality ok, keyboard's fantastic, pad's ok -- 2010-02-26 I have just received this laptop a couple of hours ago, so these are my first impressions:
- keyboard: I almost did not buy this laptop because of other reviewers comments on an allegedly lame keyboard and almost unusable track-pad. I decided to give it a shot anyway. I'm glad. The keyboard (I'm typing on it right now) is in fact quite a bit nicer than most laptops I have had, and I've gone through 10 laptops in 2009, this one's my second for 2010, the other one being a brand new macbookpro 15" purchased in January to give some context)
When it comes to laptop typing, I'm particularly picky. This keyboard is solid, well put together, full size almost and MOST IMPORTANTLY, it has a dedicated page up / page down set of keys which do not require the Fn+arrow gymnastics some of the other brands put us through. This, my friends, is a keyboard that has been developed by someone who knew (s)he would have to use it. And it shows.
The chiclet thing is ok, we all got used to it since apple big push for it, so that's nothing out of the ordinary.
- track-pad: the other thing that held me back was the track-pad. Granted it isn't the best in the land but I have no idea what the other reviewers found in there that they actually found to be almost a deal breaker. I will say that it's slightly to sensitive, so it will click sometimes when the cursor is "on the way" to an icon. You may start applications inadvertently. hmmm, ok but it still will let me use the laptop when I'm on the plane and I don't have room for an external mouse. And I'll use a mouse (microsoft arc, best thing out there) when real estates allows.
the gestures work remarkably well. As some other commenters said, nothing close to apple's though.
- quality: some people have said this unit to be creaky. They're right. It's not worse than my toshiba R600-S4212 which sells for $2,500 right now. So I don't consider this to be terrible. It compares very well with my Vaio Z series which we bought for $1,800, so not bad in that regard.
- hd: this is the scary part in my opinion. As I said, I JUST got the unit, and when I pick up the laptop while it's loaded (I'm a developer, I often have code building in the background while I'm surfing the web for documentation) and that's SCARY. it sounds like the drive head is touching the platter or something. That is truly my worst concern. I have looked at the bottom of the unit and there is a door for the hard drive, which is a 2.5" so I may be able to take the wacky drive out and replace it with an after market ssd for my own peace of mind when I'm traveling.
- screen: as good as anything, I think this is really one of the strong point of this little guy. it's clear, contrast is good, vertical angle is a little funny: you get a much better quality if you open the screen all the way. For people used to only have the screen propped at 90 degrees, it may be something to adjust to. Horizontal angle is good, which is a bummer in my case, I'll have to buy a privacy film because the person next to me on the plane would have no problem reading on my screen.
- webcam: never mind. It's a joke. That's all I have to say about that. It's still nice that they put it in.
- battery life: can't comment, I haven't the unit long enough to say anything about that. I will say that the a2 comes with the longer-lasting 5600mAh 8-cell battery 84Wh. Same battery as in the ul50.
- weight: hmmm, I would say it is surprisingly heavy for its size in all honesty. It's almost like it's make of lead and enriched uranium. And don't blame it on the battery. It's still ok, but definitely waaaaay heavier than the toshiba r600. it's also less than a third of the price, so, you do get what you pay for.
I will edit this as I go if experience tells me otherwise..
--EDIT. Monday, March 1st 2010.
carrying the laptop from my office (downstairs) to my bedroom (upstairs), the hd make loud noises like the heads were hitting the surface and caused the laptop to cease functioning altogether.
I would strongly recommend anyone buying this little laptop to include a 2.5" SSD in the purchase to make it truly usable. This HD is just non functional for a laptop. Maybe I have a bad unit but if so, it does speak to some other reviewers concerns about overall quality. I'm fortunate enough to have a macbookpro I could fall back to in order to remain functional for work this morning but this is a major issue. I'm debating whether to RMA the unit.
Good and Bad, happy camper. -- 2010-02-23 ok I've had this laptop for about... 3-4 months now and I have my personal thoughts about it (I'll make it as short and to the point as possible).
Pros:
-biggest wow is the battery life, I'm on campus ALL day without a recharge. I love how I can find a seat ANYWHERE and be good while others are going around like headless chickens clucking around for an outlet
-When closed, it's light and feels snug and sexy carrying it around. Aesthetically beautiful. sometimes i want people to notice my laptop cus it just looks like ooh la la
-oh my gosh, the screen is bright enough to use outdoors at noon on a summer day. i usually keep it at 50%-60% to save battery and save my eyes.
-speakers are pretty wow (laptop has to be on hard surface for max potential) speakers are under palmrest
-webcam + mic
- 500gb HD
-LED screen, not LCD
Cons:
-(most annoying for me) palm rest creeks and squeaks when typing, it's not loud but annoying nontheless
- no bluetooth
-HD divided into 2 seperate HD's, wish it was one
-HD 5400rpm, wished to be 7200rpm
wished it had:
-more usb's maybe 1 more in the back... 3 seems eh but it is a laptop so maybe i'm being picky
-bluetooth (for obvious reasons)
-lit keyboard
-speakers relocated, on a table, speakers sounds clear (nice), however, on my lap, it just doesnt cut it, muffled.
overall:
happy.
for $699+tax you can go a lot worse
my opinion, u get a lot for your $
companies like hp and dell selling less optimal laptops for same to higher price
if i was rich, i would go with a macbook pro, but i'm not.
i can see myself using this laptop for the next 10 years no problem

 | ASUS K50IJ-X8 15.6-Inch Black Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)
in the details -- 2010-03-10 Overall this is a good "middle of the road" laptop. I just wanted to point out a few things.
1. The memory speed is not 800mhz. The specs say-"# Memory: 4GB DDR2-800". Windows said 666mhz and when I looked inside there was a 2gb stick of 666mhz. I had a stick of 800mhz I bought to upgrade another laptop so I tossed it in and sure enough, still 666mhz in windows.
Which brings me to #2
2. This laptop is not really upgradable that I can see. It made wonder why they make it so easy to get to all the components. Sure you can put a different mini-pci wireless lan in or maybe a better hard drive, but I can find no info on a processor upgrade and the ram is already maxed out at 4gb. 2gb on-board and 1 slot with 2gb more for a total of 4gb of pc2 6400 666mhz memory.
..note...the T6600 processor does run a bus speed of 800mhz, not the memory.
I bought this for doing work on the road and maybe watch a few movies. Not a Gamer for sure. Overall, I am satisfied with this laptop. Now that I am getting used to Windows7 I like it even more!
Great Laptop for student -- 2010-03-10 I bought this laptop a few months ago because I needed a computer that could stream video for one of my classes this semester. I also like to play the sims and roller coaster tycoon. This computer has been great. I have had no problems with it at all. It is very fast and everything works great. My old desktop had half the memory. This computer has no trouble running any of my games or streaming my videos for class. I got it for a bit cheaper than this price at best buy. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone not interested in using it for heavy gaming. It doesn't have any crazy features. It is just a good computer that works.
