Use in truck -- 2010-09-03
I'm a commercial truck driver and need both a printer and scanner for everything I do. I've been through several printer/scanner combos over the years and they usually don't stand the beating that anything electronic in the truck suffers. I bought this printer four months ago and have had no issues with it whatsoever, even after nearly 75,000 miles of bouncing in the truck. I print log sheets daily and scan 3-4 times per week. I have also had to print for law enforcement a few times. I printed from inside a scale house for one officer and he had to come out to the truck to see my set-up and decided he was buying one of these printers for his house.

As for set-up, it was very quick to go from pulling it out of the box to having it ready to go. I had no issues getting it onto the network in my truck and it printed flawlessly from my old HP laptop with Windows Vista. My laptop finally failed a few weeks ago and I was forced to purchase a new computer. I purchased a Dell with Windows 7 and was printing before I had really figured much out about Windows 7.

I have the printer set to print borderless for my log sheets. The printer recommends against this, as it says print quality will be diminished. My log sheets still come out flawless. I HIGHLY recommend this printer to anyone in the market for a printer/scanner combo. Even if it failed today, I would buy another one!

Mixed bag! -- 2010-09-03
Bought this printer based on the 4.5 stars reviews. The printer is very well packaged, because of that it takes longer than I had liked to take all the plastic and orange tape off that keeps moving parts from moving (make sure you remove all tape from inside the printer as well). Installation of the printing head and ink cartridges was pretty easy, but a steady hand is necessary when installing the printing head. The wi-fi set up was tedious and lenghty but flawless and the same goes for the software installation. Overall everything went well and the printer worked right away. The printouts are of very good quality, with no banding, bluriness, streaks, blotches and/or misalignments.the printer and software are pretty easy to use and straightforward enough to get the hang of it quickly. Internet explorer seems to be quirky at printing and the website image must, at times, be scaled in the preview printing option of IE before sending it to the printer. Also the wi-fi works perfect with no glitches. Now regarding the printer itself: It is fast but noisier than I would have liked, also the build quality is ok but not great, it tends to be a little flimsier than I would have liked and way too much plastic, however it does not look cheap. This is a large sized somewaht heavy printer, just keep that in mind. Overall: GOOD!

Easy set-up for both MacBook and XP -- 2010-09-02
Set-up was relatively easy: load the install disk and run the programs. Both the MacBook and Lenovo Thinkpad running Windows XP recognized the printer wirelessly through a 2Wire (ATT) router. Functions: printing, copying, scanning (B/W and color; one-sided or duplex) all worked well. Scanner resolution at 600 dpi looks pretty good, although scanning take a few seconds to process each pass. Quiet and looks good. For an inkjet printer, I've very favorably impressed after a few weeks of moderate use. Canon seems to make consistently good products in my experience (primarily with their digicams).

The Canon MX870 is a piece of complete crapola -- 2010-09-01
This printer should be taken off the market forever. It was difficult to set up AND more importantly it takes forever to warm up and get ready to print. It goes through some dumb start up process every time you print and it takes forever. If the printer has not been used for 10 minutes, it goes through its start up process. It took me almost 25 minutes to print one stupid piece of paper this morning. What I truly hate about this printer more than anything is that, I believe, Canon has programmed the thing to make it very annoying to use ink from anyone other than Canon. Literally every time I go to print, the printer beeps and gives me an error that it cannot recognize the ink cartridges. To fix this, I simply open the case and close the case. After doing this at least 3 times every time I print, it finally prints. WTF! They have honestly gone to extreme lengths to make it so annoying that you just buy their ink. Well, guess what? I am not going to spend 3x on ink to make this printer work. There is one more really bad thing about this printer. There are two black ink bays. A large one and a small one. If either of them run out, the printer will not print. The service guy at Canon tried to make me believe that one of the black inks are used for photos and the other for printing or that they are two different black ink types. Really? He is full of crap because I never print photos and the printer used both inks. I hate this printer. I hate this printer. My entire family hates this printer. I am going to sell this printer immediately because I hate it so much and it drives me mad on a daily basis. Please do yourself a favor and don't buy this Canon MX870 printer ever!

Great product, lousy set up process -- 2010-09-03
This is a nice, budget-friendly laser printer with a lot of networking options. Unfortunately, setting these options up with the included software is a royal pain. I have a simple wireless home network with a Linksys router and two laptops, and it took me 6 hours to get the printer working properly, mainly because I foolishly followed the included documentation and setup software. If setting up your printer near your router, ignore the wireless network option and go straight for the wired network. After 6 hours, I could not get the wireless and wired options to work because the driver setup would not detect the printer. I read online an alternate way to set up using the wired network, and it worked perfectly.

For those interested in buying this printer for a simple wireless setup like mine, you'll save yourself some headache by installing the BRAdmin Light program included on the driver CD and running it to ensure it detects the printer. Plug your printer into your router using an ethernet cable. You should then be able to install the drivers using the wired network option and providing the IP for the printer (can be found using the BRAdmin program). This works on XP and Vista. I never did get the completely wireless setup to work, but since my printer is right next to the router, I really don't need to.

Print speed is decent, the monochrome print quality is good, and the compact size is nice. No autoduplex though, which is to be expected at this price. I also found generic high yield toner cartridges for about $20 after shipping on Amazon, so all in all, its a good pickup.

Great for Windows XP/7 and Ubuntu Linux -- 2010-09-01
I simply can't say enough good things about this printer. I first set up the wireless using Windows XP and in Ubuntu 10.04. The XP install was far more complicated (though admittedly straightforward). In Ubuntu it is as simple as System -> Administration -> Printing -> Add New Printer. Search for printers on the network and it will appear in the list on the left pane. Then just select it and Ubuntu will download the drivers.

The printer is fast, fairly quiet, and prints very nicely. What a deal!

Awesome printer, but set up was not fast... -- 2010-08-25
First thing first - our new ability to print to one printer wirelessly from any location in the house is worth its weight in gold. This makes my family very happy. Second - this thing is so feature rich for the price I highly reccomend that anyone with an older printer just take the leap and upgrade.

However, setup was not simple as the web site video suggested. I bet it installed perfectly for some people, but in my case the printer "could not be found" on my network by any of my computers. Eventually I figured out how to force it, but in total I spent about 6 hours trouble shooting to get at the root of the problem.

A little nit pick is all the bloatware software it installed. I know I could have picked what I did and didn't want, but I wasn't sure what was required and what wasn't to make it work...

Great printer, but guzzles ink! -- 2010-08-23
Replaced a Canon PIXMA iP4000 printer, because its printhead failed. Also wanted scanning capability. This has a great scanner, great print quality, and prints faster, with a LITTLE less initial grinding and thinking than my last Canon printer, but, wow, it GUZZLES ink. We are LIGHT users, and it's drained all but one ink tank in 2 months! Despite Canon warnings, I'm planning on using compatible ink cartridges after the warranty period is over. I just can't afford $50 in ink every 2 months. Canon, take heed: this will be my last Canon printer unless you fix this problem!

It lasted 6 months -- 2010-08-27
Our last printer, an HP 1350v All In One lasted 5 years but then died (computer could not recognize a printer was connected via USB). So we went and bought ourselves an F4480 ColorSmart printer. It did what we needed it to do. Then we bought a new desk and unplugged everything so it could all be set up on it. After that, no printing. Thinking a software reinstall was in order I uninstalled all the HP software, unplugged the printers USB cable, rebooted, reinstalled the software, turned the printer on, and, connected the USB cable when requested by the installation. No dice. I waited several minutes until finally a message box appeared telling me it had not detected any printer. So I uninstalled everything, unplugged the printer again, rebooted, then tried again only this time I chose a different USB port. Still nothing. The computer sees no printer attached. The ports are working fine because I have other devices connected and they are working. I disconnected all the other USB stuff back there and tried the printer alone also to no avail. I even posted to the HP Support Forum but got no answer, it must have stumped them. So in essence the printer is a fine copier (it works from the console buttons) but does nothing else. This will be the last HP printer we get. Even at a discounted price of about $90 I expected we should have gotten at least a years use out of it.

A Tremendous Annoyance -- 2010-08-24
After running well for a couple of months, it suddenly stopped printing any word documents. I checked online and saw that many had had this problem. I tried their suggestions--checking everything, reinstalling program--to no avail. I am truly fed up.

Perfect Printer for what I needed! -- 2010-08-23
Printer is perfect for what I needed it for. It is actually a little more noisy than the last brother printer that I had, but other than that, it is great. Service and delivery were perfect.

Excellent functionality and quality for the price -- 2010-08-23
When I finally got tired of the price of inkjet ink and the horrible speed of my old printer, I started shopping for small laser unit. This one consistently received great reviews as a simple home/small office printer, and they were right on the nose. It prints very quickly, although there is a very slight delay in spooling to the printer. It is reasonably quiet, although there is some noise. The print quality is excellent, it hasn't jammed even once so far, it was easy to set up, doesn't take up much space, loads easily from the front, and just plain works smoothly. I waited for a few weeks to submit this, but I've put quite a load on it in the past weeks, and it performs as advertised. It has no fancy features, so I hesitated to 5 star it there, but for everything else, I can highly recommend it.

Good product for the price... -- 2010-09-03
This All-In-One printer has lots of features and prints with good quality. Also prints quickly for the type of printer it is. The wireless set up was a bit difficult and was a bit time consuming. I called Epson customer service, and they were very nice but unable to resolve the issue. I think it was a computer networking issue (not the printer). Therefore, I ended up setting it up as a ad hoc (peer-to-peer network) which works fine with all the laptops. I can print, scan, and even fax from all the laptops. If you have trouble setting up the wireless through your current router, consider the add manaul feature. Read the entire networking set-up instruction manual to see what would work best for your networking needs before you install. I was impressed with the price for all its abilities.

Totally Recommended!!! -- 2010-08-31
It's a work-horse, easy to set-up and works flawlessly every time. I have connected it to both MAC and Windows 7 computers and works fine and easy, without any compatibility issues. It is user-friendly. I would recommend this printer, every single day and twice on Sunday. It's by far the best printer you might get.

Good Cheap Printer -- 2010-08-31
I think for the price, this printer is a great deal. I love it and I find it very easy to use. I would suggest it to anyone looking for a printer. The regular ink kinda runs out fast so I would suggest the bigger XL version. But other than that no complaints.

Love my new printer -- 2010-08-30
This has to be the best printer/scanner/fax/copier Ive owned. the wireless feature is awesome!!! It will have to be seen how long it performs at a high level, but so far Im loving it. All the positive feedbacks is why I purchased this model. Ink is not to expensive if you shop around also.

Good printer -- 2010-08-31
The features of this printer are great. The print quality on Photo Paper looks great, better than I expected however, the print quality on premium paper varies from ok to very good. Overall I would recommend this printer.

ease of printing -- 2010-08-29
Printers have come a long way since the 80's. Quality and utility has especially rocketed. The Artisan only lacks the ability to scan slides and negatives, so I had to buy a V500 for that job.

A Great Paperweight -- 2010-08-31
I am a HP fan and this printer is not even compatible with my new HP system. It constantly has printing spool errors (you need to go to services and stop and restart spooler) and then it loses all the print drivers.

When it works its just fine/good in terms of quality (although noisy and constantly adjusting as others have reported) but this product is absurdly unstable. Copying function is good.

Save yourself a lot of time and frustration and buy a different printer.

Very nice wireless printing -- 2010-08-27
This is a big improvement over my previous series 6200 printer. Its wireless and prints on both sides and is more substantial and not nearly as flimsy.
