Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PCFujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for PC

FUJITSU BUMMER -- 2010-03-08
Hi.
My old Fujitsu scansnap worked just fine until upgrading to a Windows 7 machine. The following is my tech support inquiry and subsequent reply:

I've been through the Fujitsu website and I cannot determine how to run my older Fujitsu Scansnap model # fi-5110EOX2 on a new machine.
It ran fine on 32 bit Win XP. I am unable to run it with existing software on a new machine (64 bit - WIN 7).
Following some webpage instructions, I downloaded a Vista upgrade prior to trying to install the WIN 7 upgrade, but the Vista software wouldn't run on the 64 bit platform.
Is this older scansnap machine incompatible with WIN 7?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

We do not have Windows 7 drivers for the fi-5110EOX2 and do not have plans on releasing drivers for this model. We support our scanners for 5 years after they have been discontinued and this model has been discontinued for more then this period of time. Please look into upgrading to the S1500
Thank you
Fujitsu Computer Products of America

How is that for B.S.? The recommended "upgrade" is well over $400.
Small business not requiring high speed scanning? Try a 1200 dpi flatbed for < $75.
Works just fine.

Anyone like to buy a quite functional fi-5110EOX2 scansnap?

Fantastic Scanner -- 2010-03-08
We started out with one of these fantastic little scanners and have now added 3 more. We use them to scan documents and nothing that we have ever used works better. Recently we added one to scan photographs of homes that we insure and although the type and quality of the photographs varies from good to poor, this scanner allows us to scan them into an electronic file and the result is a scanned photo that is just as good as the original. Due to the differing size and type of pictures we do them one at a time. For documents, however we are able to put a small stack into the scanner and the automatic feed pulls them though with the press of a button. The software that comes with the scanner enables duplex scanning of documents into file storage or conversion into MS Office programs with ease. The OCR works well also This is one of the best, easy to use and inexpensive (for the work it does) small desktop scanners on the market. We love them and will be buying more as the need arises.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for the MacintoshFujitsu ScanSnap S1500M Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanner for the Macintosh

Works great with Snow Leopard -- 2010-03-08
For the last few months, I've been wanting to digitize my personal documents and go paperless. Originally, I thought seriously about getting the NeatDesk Organizer for Mac but was discouraged to do so because of all the negative reviews by Amazon customers. Upon reading the MacWorld review on the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M, I decided to do more research about it. The positive reviews on Amazon made me buy it and I got a great deal by purchasing an open box unit through [...].

The installation was very easy and I was glad to know that there is an updated software for Snow Leopard, which installed just fine. I was happy to know that it came with a full version of Adobe Acrobat (even though I already had my own copy).

I was amazed at the scanning speed and the ability to scan double-sided pages. The scanner actually detects a two-sided document versus a single-sided document. Sometimes, though, the scanner thinks a document is double-sided if the text bleeds through the back. That's not an issue for me. If I want to just do a single-side scan, I can just choose the option through the ScanSnap manager software.

The page feeder worked well for me. It even scanned some of my documents that were printed on very thin paper. I read on the reviews that some users had a problem with the feeder jamming. I always stacked my papers before putting them on the feeder so it's never been a problem.

Finally, the scanner does not take up a whole lot of room. When it is not being used, I can close the feeders and it sits perfectly on my desk.

This product is worth every penny and I consider it a good investment towards a paperless home office.

perfect for "going paperless" -- 2010-03-07
Like a lot of people, I still have a lot of paper coming to my home. There are bills that from smaller companies that cannot be made electronic, receipts, business cards and other paper that I have been trying to file into my physical filing system: a filing cabinet with appropriately labeled folders. Physical filing is a pain, of course, so much so that I don't like doing it and paper often backs up until I break down and spend hours filing it all away. Also, physical systems are not at all fast to search.

After researching all the options to have a paperless home office for my Mac-based home, I settled on the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M and DevonThink Pro Office (DTPO). The scanner and DevonThink work brilliantly well together. The scanner is very fast (< 2s per page), and its software figures out whether to scan one or both sides of the page as it slides through the machine, and the orientation is also corrected to be upright even if a document is sideways or upside down. Used with DTPO (which, like the ScanSnap 1500M, comes with Abby Reader's excellent OCR software), there is one-button convenience: hit the large, blue-lit Scan button on the thing, and the PDF+Text document is automatically placed in the Inbox of my DevonThink database. Since DTPO learns how to classify things, I can often click "Auto classify" and the document will then be sorted into its proper folder.

I now almost look forward to "filing" my physical paper because it's so easy and--dare I say it--fun ... so much so that paper no longer piles up. Also, if I need to find an important document, I can easily search, either using Spotlight or, typically, using the brilliant search capabilities of DevonThink (I know this is a review for the ScanSnap 1500M, but in my case it is inextricably intertwined with DTPO). Even without DTPO, this is an excellent paperless office scanner, for its driver allows you to sort incoming documents into the folder of your choice.

Yes, I have had the occasionally ragged receipt that has jammed, but un-jamming is brain-dead easy: you lift the front cover and pull the paper out. Other than that, this scanner has processed hundreds of flimsy-looking receipts, business cards and large, multi-page documents with aplomb.

This scanner is completely compatible with Snow Leopard, but at the time I bought it, I needed to download a new driver from Fujitsu's website (the URL was in the manual).

In short, I highly recommend this scanner to any Mac owner who wants to rid themselves of the drudgery of filing paper.

Fujitsu Scan Snap -- 2010-03-04
The Fujitsu S1500 ScanSnap is a terrific pdf scanner. It is easy to set up, has a great feed, and is very fast. Its utility was worth the cost in the first week of ownership.

Small, fast, efficient, quiet...perfect! -- 2010-03-04
I purchased this scanner based on the multiple positive reviews it had. And I fully agree with them!. In a couple of months I managed to transform all my documents, recipes, letters, photos and everything else into digital-easy-to-search files. The single problem I had was a curious moire pattern when scanning glossy photos, that I solved scanning face up rather than face down. Great product!

upgraded from epson 4180 to 4990 -- 2010-02-26
We have had an Epson scanner since 2006, recently it just didn't perform like it should, so we bought the equivalent Epson 4990. The scanner is great, but the software that came with it is much to be desired.
It has Presto bizcard which we cannot use on ANY of our computers. We have a Windows 7 PC and 3 Mac's(bizcard only works with windows, only not 7). Also it came with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2, which there is a current version 8.
This is truly an insult. Just beware if you just want to use the scanner it's a great tool, otherwise the software is antiquated.

It took less then 10 minutes to get set up with Windows Vista and test this out. My number one reason for buying was for the 35 MM slide archive I have and want to convert my favorites to digital images. I had heard stories about scanners trying to capture the 35MM slide image and my dad who is a photo buff had an HP sometime back and got so dissatisfied he went to an outfit to get slides converted for more then I paid for the EPSON. The result, it blew away all expectations. I was able to digitize easily at 8Meg and pop it onto my plasma 50" screen with amazing results of the Virgin Islands taken 25 years ago. (I actually had to throttle back from 1200 DPI because it produced an 18Meg file.) Colors were rich and detail was crisp. I haven't had a chance to test it with old photos yet but for converting the slides it was worth every dime and more.

Compact and easy to use. One note, documents must be brushed off of dust or they will appear streaky.

Really nice scanner for the money -- 2010-02-05
I also own a Xerox DocuMate 152 for my desktop PC, which is a full-duplex scanner with an auto document feeder. This unit is paired with my laptop and replaces one which had a 16-bit Cardbus interface which was not available on my new laptop. The Visioneer has Kodak Virtual ReScan (VRS) technology, which optimizes the contrast of your black & white scans, setting the threshold almost as perfectly as you would if you started in grayscale and tweaked the balance back to black & white...a real time-saver. I also like the notification area toolbar, where you can choose the behavior of the scanner when a sheet of paper is inserted; it can either do nothing and wait for you to launch software manually or begin scanning once its sensor is tripped. They have also included a novel cleaning feature which will draw in a fiber cleaning sheet and wipe it back and forth a few times before ejecting it, thus reducing the susceptibility of streaks if something gets dragged across the sensor. It's fast, seems to feed consistently and offers great scans. No complaints here (thus far).

Horrible software -- 2010-03-09
The software this comes with doesn't allow you to save as a pdf, which is generally what anyone scanning documents wants. I had to call tech support, who didn't know how to save as a pdf. They suggested looking at Adobe software or 3rd party software. Why would I want to buy a scanner and then have to buy additional software on top of that?

Works with windows 7 -- 2010-02-24
This is a great little scanner. It scans anything from a business card up to at least a letter size page. I haven't tried a legal size page. I did have a hard time getting it to run on my computer which has the Windows 7 operating system. I was basically trying to pound a square peg into a round hole. After about 2 hours I finally got smart and went to the company site, [...], and downloaded the correct drivers. From there it was a cinch, only took about 2 minutes to have it up and running. I recommend if you are running Windows 7 that you download the proper drivers first. It will save you a lot of frustration.

Beware of Licensing issues -- 2009-12-12
Beware: The bulk of the almost $200 cost here is the license. The only way to access this license is by entering the "Product License Code" into the installation software during installation. Woe behold anyone who recieves a box with no sticker since there is absolutely no help either wih Amazon, the seller, the seller's FAQ center on the sellers website or anywhere else I can find. Without this little sticker with the Product License Code, what I have here is a very expensive paperweight. Extremely disappointing.

Exactly what I needed -- 2009-09-16
It set up and worked relatively easily with Vista and XP. It does very well with simple cards. No editing required. If the card has lot's of logo graphics or odd fonts, it has some trouble. It will also occasionally mix up an 'i' with an 'l', but that is understandable. Recalibration reduces the problem. It also did not recognize hand written corrections on cards.

The big plus however, is that it has a very slick interface with Outlook Contacts. When it scans a card, it loads what it read into the New Contact window and awaits your edits. It also drops a .jpg of the card right into the notes section for easy comparison. That makes corrections easy and allows you to toss the cards.

I was not expecting a magic reader and it isn't, but it definitely helped me clean up Contacts and the hundreds of accumulated cards.

Fast and simple -- 2009-04-17
This scanner is fast, easy to use, and works great with the scanshell.net database software. It has reduced the time for our visitor management system, previously hand writing all of the visitor information, to nearly zero! I have only had one repair and one replacement (of two we use) in the last 4 years with thousands of scans - very dependable!

A very bad experience -- 2008-08-28
I had two professional IT support people work separately on installing and getting this operating (at $60 per hour each). My operating system is XP. Neither was successful. The device is a piece of junk, the software is terrible, and the customer service is non-responsive - you have to fill out an eticket because they won't answer their phone, and after two days there is still no response. I don't think I can find the packing slip - I bought it through Amazon so I probably can't return it in which case I am going to take it down to the town square and publicly smash it to bits with a baseball bat.

Solid scanner, not perfect -- 2010-02-23
I've had this scanner about five years now, and it still performs fine. You do have to replace the springs that grab paper every few thousand sheets. (I've probably scanned 30 or 40 thousand pages or so). I did not find the included software worked particularly, so I got Abbyy FineReader, which works very well for OCR and scanning. Still, installation was not smooth (this has no doubt improved since I installed it).

The biggest problem with the machine is that the feed only holds about 50 or 75 sheets of paper or so. So if you are scanning a large volume of documents you have to monitor it. It does jam occasionally, enough that it has to be watched.

My paper holder thing that catches paper after it is scanned broke off recently. This was certainly my fault, but I haven't been able to figure out how to replace it.

All in all, this is a good, solid, useful scanner for low volume or medium volume jobs. Probably not for high volume unless you are fairly patient about monitoring the scanner carefully.

OK scanner, limited lifetime -- 2009-10-13
I've had this scanner for almost three years, and it worked well for about two and a half years and has been more or less impossible to use since then. Like that of another reviewer, the roller on my machine now fails to grip pages (in fact, it fails to turn at all in some circumstances). Scans of more than one page don't work.

The upside is that we used this scanner for a couple of years where it worked more or less flawlessly, over the course of easily thousands of pages. Even so, an $800 machine should last more than two years before being felled by an (apparently common) mechanical failure.

Excellent way to go paperless -- 2008-01-07
Bought this for my husband. He loves the ease of use and being able to reduce paper on his desk. Excellent product.

Sorry Visioneer, you just keep getting worse -- 2007-11-17
I bought this scanner awhile back thinking it would save a bunch of time to be able to scan both sides of a page in one feed. Silly me. This is the worst PaperPort I ever owned. I have owned four over the years and kept hoping they would get even better. I eventually returned this POS.

I wish I had the first PaperPort I ever bought, which was terrific, but of course was not updated to work with XP. Visioneer, if you're going to force us to upgrade at least make the new scanner as good as the last. I've had the 100, 200 and 300 and all of them are problem-plagued. The 200 and 300 cut off the top 1/4 inch of your doc no matter what you do. Their auto-crop feature works about one in four scans with the result being that it cuts the right or left third of the page off. I just spent most of the day scanning with the strobe 200 and nearly lost my mind. I had to unplug and replug to get the scanner to be recognized. I had to reboot. Refeed. Straighten. Rescan. You get the picture. I am one PO'd owner.

On the plus side, I have always found the folks at Visioneer tech support to be some of the most honest and patient I have ever encountered. I feel sorry for them. I'll bet they want to ring their friggin's engineers' necks fifty times a day!

Will someone come out with portable sheetfed scanner that really works and actually saves time instead of creating massive headaches? I'll pay $300 for such a scanner, but it BETTER WORK!

Also Visioneer engineers and coders, how about releasing a finished driver for the Strobe 200? Vista's only been out ten months now. What the heck!
