 | Canon CanoScan N1220U Scanner
trying to resurrect! done -- 2010-07-30 I have 2 MFPs, one with a flat bed, the other with a sheet feeder/fax scanner, but the printer drivers have gone south, so on my Desktop, which still runs XP in contrast to my Lappy with Win7, I am trying to set up this scanner for a past eBay sale, which I neglected to supply some documentation.
At this point I am just trying to recall my experiences with the scanner.
It was pricey when I bought it at about one hundred seventy dollars at the membership club based near Seattle. The software it came with was fairly extensive compared to the Microtec parallel based scanner I used previous, but this last one retailed for less than seventy dollars.
The lid is supremely dented, I don't think it is aluminum like my Acer lappy, but is painted but thin stainless steel. I recall hardly ever using it because the setup process in a very cramped area for a standalone scanner didn't seem to make worth it. However, the few scans I did make seemed pretty good. An interesting feature is a "lock" to prevent movement of the element.
====
hey, it still works...that is on an XP media center pc with sp3, the software is too clunky...it is super slow...i think it is still usb 1.1 with a slow movement of the element or platen, not too bad for a 10 y.o. purchase
After I reset up this scanner I will report my experiences!
Scanner -- 2010-02-10 Gentlemen,
I have not used this equipment because I did not recieve the installation disk. Thanks

 | Visioneer OneTouch 8600 Flatbed Scanner
Still Working...After All These Years -- 2009-02-12 While considering replacing my 8600 Visioneer (which I purchased in 1999), I was surprised to see that this model is still available at Amazon.com. Two years ago, I purchased a Canon 8600f as a possible replacement. It sits on my desk, rarely used, and collects dust while my trusty Visioneer continues to crank out excellent scans after nearly 10 years of heavy and faithful service. I have upgraded the PaperPort software originally bundled with the unit (to version 9), and I have added several other software packages which utilize the Visioneer with nary a hiccup. I have also appreciated the functional task buttons conveniently placed along the side -- all of which work as programmed (something I cannot say for the Canon scanner, none of which have ever worked for me). Maybe, it's not really time for me to get another scanner ... especially as I am not planning to install Vista on either my desktop (a still perfectly functioning XP machine acquired in 2001) or my laptop. I feel like I am winning the war against Microsoft and all those other software and hardware producers who generate programs and equipment which compel users to expend thousands regularly for "upgrades" (usually buggy) which marginally benefit users ... if, at all (a dubious claim in most cases if my personal experience is any measure).
gray scale -- 2004-04-13 I have had my scanner for over three years and it really saves me a lot of time. But I do wish that their was a customer service line to help with problems that are not available.I have tried everything to make my faxes come out in black and white but to no avail. The background is always gray. Even when I just print to copy. Are their manuals that I can purchase?

 | Epson Perfection 1660 Photo - Flatbed scanner - 8.5 in x 11.7 in - 1600 dpi x 3200 dpi - USB
Owned 2, love the results on both -- 2008-10-13 Owned 2 of these over the years, one when they were released, just purchased a second to replace my old one (years of dumping coffee, paint, etc on the glas finally caught up to me) - they are durable and reliable scanners, also fast (well, maybe not as fast as some new ones, but fast enough for me, doing 600dpi 8x10 scans often)
Would recommend if you can find a used/refurb. Otherwise buy the current version of this edition from Epson.

 | Canon® CanoScan 8800F Flatbed Color Scanner
You can scan and stitch almost any size slide - including 110 -- 2010-08-17 I've been using this scanner for about 4 months doing massive amounts of projects (including slides back to the 1930s). I am glad to share advice.
You can watch my tricks and tips for the 8800F at:

The point is that I am able to scan anything I have in my slide box. The video explains it quite well. I hope this answers any concerns.

Does not scan 110 film -- 2010-05-27 It was tough for me to decide on how many stars to give this. I bought this scanner to scan my slides, 35mm film, photos, but especially the many rolls of 110 film that I shot back in the '70s/'80s with my old Vivitar camera. It scans everything BUT the 110 film great. I'm actually quite happy with what it does for the non-110 film types.
But, I'm left without a solution for my 110 film. Because scanning 110 film is important to me, and was something I was hoping to be able to do with this scanner, I'm giving it only 1 star. I do this mainly for the benefit of anyone else who is looking into this scanner for 110 film. This rating should make it stand out for you, to alert you to the lack of this solution.
I contacted Canon a year ago, asking about supporting 110 film. They ended up shipping me (free of charge) a complete new set of the film mounts that come with the scanner. This was cool and unexpected, and it's great having a backup set, but it didn't solve my problem.
Recently, I went back online searching forums to see if there's a solution for scanning 110 film. Not finding one, I contacted Canon again to see if they've since updated their software/firmware and created a 110 film mount. After some back and forth, I have learned that they have not.
I was told that Canon doesn't make ANY products that scan 110 film. I told them that I find that surprising, as I would think that with the advent of digital cameras, their biggest market for scanning film would be for cameras in use in the 1990s and earlier. 110 film was quite popular in the '70s and '80s and is probably still in use today.
I'm disappointed with this, but not upset. Like I said, it's a great scanner for other film formats. For me, the deal-breaker is that it just won't support scanning my 110 film. If they ever do provide updates that allow this to scan 110 film, I will gladly upgrade the rating I gave this.

 | Nikon Super CoolScan 5000 ED Film Scanner
Amazing how extremely old technology maintains its price -- 2009-11-16 Its amazing to me that this model, the 5000ED and the 9000ED can maintain their outrageously high price for so long!
I created two attributes and gave them both 1 star:
1) Valued Technology = *
If the film scanning technology was so valuable, Nikon would be replacing and upgading the electronics every 2 or 3 yrs at the most.
This is a extremely OLD electronic product! Its market introduction date was Novemeber 2003 - 6 years ago! Or about 3.5-4 released generations of other electronic products ago, including cameras.
The Super Cool Scan 9000 ED came out in the Spring of 2004.. more than 5.5 yrs ago
The 9000ED uses firewire, which is stupid since USB 2.0 is slightly faster than firewire.
But as I said they built these products a very very very very long time ago. At that time firewire still meant something and USB 2.0 was just started. Hence their firewire port.
USB 3.0 is nearly out.
2) Customer Support = *
Forget about it, its not supported very well
The support for these film scanners is arguably the worst ever recorded for tech support in general
Reviews abound in the internet, if you're lucky you will not need customer service
3) Price Stability = *****
Like I said its amazing that these Nikon Film Scanners can maintain their pricing over the years!
These electronic products are nearly 6 years old!!! NO other electronic product comes close to maintaining their price.
In fact, their price stability reminds of of the price stability in the Lenses made by Nikon and Canon. But most of those Lenses can hardly be called an electronic product - they're lenses.
Summary:
I hate these scanners, because Nikon does not feel there is a need for them. I want a faster scanner, this is OLD technology! I want ability to scan more film at the same time as well.
So I want speed and capacity!
If you have tens of thousands of film strips to scan like I do, and you want high quality scans, IT WILL TAKE FOREVER TO SCAN THESE!
THE TECHNOLOGY IN THESE BOXES IS OLD - VERY OLD. We are talking 6 years people.
If you go buy a laptop, a television, or a printer, or even a camera, Im sure you want something that is using new technology! Anyone want to go out and buy a 6 year old printer? NO ME !
Nikon CoolScan 5000 ED -- 2009-10-18 All I can say is the product works great, and that I could not ask for a better out come on the end product. Keep up the good work. NIKON

 | Canon D660U USB Flatbed Film Scanner
Poor Quality Control & Support -- 2005-06-16 Be warned - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT
Unfortunately I can not give this a Zero Star. When purchased new the scanner was faulty, and exhibited poor quality control with particles inside the scanner. It was returned for repair under warranty twice, and finally the main curcuit board was replaced.
I was present when the unit was being reassembled after the replacment of the board and was horrified to see the service tech use metholated spirits to clean the underside of the class as the owners manual clearly states not to do this !!!(it has his grubby finger prints all over it from the repair work).
Despite spending several thousand dollars on Canon products over the years, I will not be buying another Canon product.
Poor quality control and customer services can only be rewarded in this manner.
Dust Inside, aka DOA -- 2002-08-17 When you get it, check the inside glass with flash light before you plug it in. Mine was peppered with grime and dust; Scans show these as white specks everywhere! I'm returning this product from company that does no quality checks on its product. Mine also had DOA film scanner. You can be sure I'll try to avoid all future canon products.

 | HP SCANJETN6310 Document Flatbed Scanner 15 PPM,2400+ Dpi,adf/flatbed, Versatile
Avoid it at all costs !!!! -- 2009-06-30 Unless you want to waste days trying to get a defective product to work avoid this scanner. I was on the phone with HP's Costa Rican customer support (abuse) department. After 3 days of dialing into my computer their incompetent Costa Rican based support staff informed me that they could not get the software to work. This even involved editing my registry. It was clearly defective which he admitted. He said a case manager would then call me. 7 days and 5 e-mails later a case manager called me to let me know that I could purchase a more expensive scanner for a whopping $50 discount ($100 more than Amazon's price). He then told me that the original tech support person should have let me know they could not do anything for me and that was that senor.
HP's tech support has slowly deteriorated through the years but the outsourced Costa Rican based business division, which covers this scanner is a totally unprofessional operation. Not only is the software defective (version 1) but you cannot communicate with them or get them to understand the meaning of customer service. Even if I wanted to I don't have the time to deal with HP's continuing deterioration of product and software quality. I have owned many HP products in the past and they are more and more problematic. If you want a company to stand behind a product it is not HP. Save your time and money and buy another brand. I have had 2 weeks of my time wasted by HP.
Update.... 3 months later, HP replaced the product with the N6350 after another division intervened. The N6310 started to fail calibration (hardware failure) on startup only 8 weeks after receiving it, keep in mind this is in addition to their software not working. The N6350 arrived with a scratched glass scanbed with specks under it which cannot be removed and cleaned. HP's quality continues to deteriorate and the Costan Rican (HP Business Products) Support Division which oversees all scanners is the worst. I am stuck with the HP product.
A friend recently got an Epson all in one which works beautifully and installed flawlessly. Lexmark/Epson all have better products at this point. Try to avoid HP scanners....unless you want to waste a lot of time dealing with a customer division that does not care about their customers.
Bad Experience -- 2009-03-30 I purchased one of these from Amazon and it didn't function correctly. Amazon replaced it and the second one also had functional problems. So I returned the second unit also and then bought one directly from HP which worked fine. It is a super scanner when it works. My view - if you want this scanner, buy it from HP since the price is about the same.

 | HP ScanJet 3970 Digital Flatbed Scanner
scan multiple items and separate them individually -- 2010-08-29 This is only scanner I have found that allows me to scan multiple items and give each on a separate name
Yellow Streaks -- 2010-06-18 Scanning family pictures and documents, YELLOW STREAKS all down Left and Right sides. HORRIBLE QUALITY even at 600dpi. Don't waste your cash on this, get a real scanner. That would be an Epson scanner for those who don't know.

 | HP 4200Cse ScanJet Flatbed Scanner
Great starter scanner -- 2005-10-10 Great scanner for windows95 and very easy to use with it's one button technology but even with the downloadable upgrades from the HP website it just won't interoperate very well with Windows XP.
Operating System Upgrade Problem -- 2003-02-25 My HP Scanjet 4200C was operated successfully for 2 years using Windows 98SE. I upgraded my PC which came with Windows Xp Home edition. Windows XP does not support the HP Scanjet 4200C software. Also, unable to find a WEB site to download HP 4200C drivers compatible with Windows XP. What is my next course of action?

 | Canon CanoScan 5000F Scanner
SCAN BABY SCAN -- 2010-05-17 it works- it scans documents.. I dont use it for pics but documents only for now. It does what it needs to do
Far Exceeded My Expectations! -- 2004-03-15 You can still get this scanner new at eBay or at some camera places. I got it solely because I wanted a film scanner, but could not afford a "real" one. Flatbed scanners are considered inferior for such things. Well, if this scanner is making inferior scans of negatives or slides, I can't tell! I think they are wonderful. It even has the FARE system, which is usually found on more expensive models. The software bundle has loads of photo software, as well as an OCR program. I have used the OCR program once...there were too many words it couldn't read...and I could have typed up the article faster than proofreading the mistakes. But I have not read up on everything yet, mainly because there is no printed manual, only a Quick Start Guide. But at least the QSG tells you more than most. It's still confusing at times, though. Even things I've done before can be confusing to repeat. It's just not the easiest software on the face of the Earth. But as I said, it scans negatives and slides beautifully, as well as photos. It does far better with photos than my HP All-In-One. It should, however, since it is a photo/film scanner. And it's a nice priced one at that!
