above-average quality at a price anyone can afford -- 2002-01-02
I've had mine for over a year and love it. It's inexpensive, takes *zero* experience and has given me absolutely no hassle whatsoever. All the software you need comes along and is easily installed, only one cord to plug in (gotta love that usb connection) and the photo quality has been far better than the price tag suggests. I've used its results on websites, both personally and professionally with great results. Unless you're a digital photographer or just enjoy blowing money, I see no reason not to buy this product.

TERRIBLE SCANNER -- 2001-06-17
PROS: INEXPENSIVE SCANNER CONS: EVERYTHING ELSE. THE COLOR REPRODUCTION IS HORRIBLE. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCANNER TO ANYONE. SPEND THE EXTRA MONEY AND BUY THE EPSON OR THE CANON

Very satisfied -- 2010-04-08
I was very please with the process for purchasing this scanner. Forms were easy to fill out and I was kept informed of the progress of my order.
This was a used scanner that was compatible with my os and scanner program. Bravo to all.

PERFORMANCE DETERIORATED -- 2007-10-14
My 9220 replaced an earlier model 6200, but was never as good. The higher speed scan was at the expense of quality and I had to bump DPI settings way up to 400 to get legible scans. As the machine aged, the scans got fainter, so I had to change to gray scale to be able to read printed docs and invoices after scanning. Then the color gave up and produced only garish reds in the scan. If it was a color printer I'd say that the black cartridge was empty!

We need a photo scanner and this one can't produce a usable color copy. I like the PaperPort software and will be looking for a compatible TWAIN scanner to use it with. Maybe Canon.

works fine under Windows XP Service Pack 2 -- 2005-07-01
I just wanted to report that contrary to what others are saying, this scanner works fine for me in XP SP2. It took me all of three minutes to get it working.

I downloaded the latest driver (an ancient one dated 7-30-03) and the driver said it couldn't connect to the scanner. Then I went to the Device Manager (it was listed as a non-working scanner under "Other devices") and said "reinstall driver" and it now works perfectly.

I doubt there is a problem with the driver itself, only with the driver being properly installed under SP2. If you install the driver normally then reinstall it under device manager, it works fine.

There's really nothing wrong with the scanner.

It does what I need -- 2010-02-08
This is the first new scanner I bought in a long time. Therefore, you can see why I would be impressed with anything. I use it also as a fax machine. It is quick and has great resolution for pictures.
Now for the down side. I cannot use the pass through parallel port because the printer (Canon BJ610) and the scanner keep getting each other's signals. Therefore, I tried the scanner on lpr2. The Visioneer people just laughed and said "lp1 or nothing". I told them that I got new One-Touch software CD but no scanner drivers. They said that the old ones would work and that if you misplaced the original CD that was tough.

Wish I could scan something! -- 2003-12-23
I bought a Visioneer 7600 USB One Touch scanner and have yet to be able to scan anything! The install goes smoothly or so one thinks. You connect and it appears to be fine. I attempt to scan an image and it only scans a black dark image. I do my leg work and research to find updated drivers and do at the Visioneer support site and the update crashes my computer! I've tried install fixes per other forums and message boards and nothing works. I can install just fine and it LOOKS like it's going to work lovely but still - just the black dark images. Oh btw - I am running Windows 98 SE - seems to be the key here. Wondering - was this scanner only made for one operating system - Windows 98!?! Not a wise choice for your money.
P.S. Would appreciate anyone emailing me if they know the fix for this problem of mine! TY gypsyfw@prodigy.net

Dependable quality -- 2003-11-14
The scanner itself has what I value most: dependability. I need something that works everyday as I have no down time in my digital photography and design business. I can't tell a customer to hold on while I'm trying to get a product in for service. Needless to say this has not broken down on me since. It has metal rails which is nice when everything else looks like they have gone entirely plastic. With that being said I like the fact that they give you an advanced menu bar, not treating you as if you are to incompetent to know what color curves and descreening are used for. For those of you who do not know what I am talking about don't worry, they have a simple version of the software that comes with the scanner.

Professional Scanner Budget Price -- 2003-10-10
I'm been shooting film for quite some time and decided to give digital a try. I consider myself to be a professional and wanted a professional scanner, but not something that would put me out. After reading a bunch of reviews I came up with the 8700 Pro. Came with Silverfast which I have heard great things about and this software that lets you blow up a 35mm slide to near poster size without pixelation occuring. Scanner also comes with calibration software that allowed me to plug in my ICM profile into the software for the correct color on everything. Next step is to obtain a great printer. I recommend B&H as they were excellent on helping and the scanner shipped pretty fast.

Does exactly what I need it for! -- 2009-10-16
I bought this to get old photos from relatives. So many of the older photos my family has are deteriorating fast. If I have my laptop; I just scan as many of their pictures while I'm there. Then everyone gets a copy. The badly torn and faded get a second life in photo processing. This will help archive my families history. LOVE IT!

all i can say is WOW -- 2004-07-15
This is a GREAT little photo scanner. Its so easy to use and put onto your computer. Its also a great price and I ended up buying these for a few friends last christmas. The quality is excellent!!!! The software allows you to instantly see the image and manipulate it before saving it. This is a great gift for someone who has tons of pictures lying around! I cant remember but I think it only goes up to a 5 x 7 print but thats more than enough for me as most of the standard photos I get now are 4 x 6. I do have a digital camera but this is so cheap and comes in handy when my friends show me pictures and i want a copy!

A Good Scanner If You Are NOT Using Windows 7 -- 2010-04-02
I bought this scanner used and found while it makes good scans, it's full potential is not realized with Windows's 7.

Hardware pretty good, software lousy -- 2007-09-15
Owned the 4570c for a while. Avoid the bundled driver software if you can. The latest version, v2.0, downloads a mere 238MB (that's right "MB"!). It runs turtle speed, making a nice USB 2.0 scanner seem like it's USB 0.002.

Plugging into XP machine (my laptop), I let Microsoft find the driver. It downloaded and installed WIA-HP, a twain driver that is menial (very limited controls) but operates with considerably improved speed under my applications... a big time saver if you've got a pile of doc's to scan.

My home desktop is still Win2KPro. I've had no luck getting the WIA-HP driver to run on it, unfortunately.

Works great with older systems, not so great (if at all) with Vista -- 2009-08-21
Unlike the other user, we had results from this product using an older Windows operating system. However, when we bought a new PC and changed to Windows Vista Premium, this scanner would not work no matter how many drivers we downloaded or how many of Epson's recommended programs we downloaded. It contiually gave us messages that we needed to download a driver, the scanner wasn't connected to the computer, or it was being used by another utility. In all cases, none of that was true.

Using an older operating system, we were able to download and print photos from originals pretty easily although not without problems. If the original to be scanned or copied was set at the top of side margins of the screen bed, sections were often cut off of the electronic copy you made. This happened to me all the time when I would try to scan a copy of the booklet cover that came with a CD. I often had to make photos 3-4 times to finally get it right. There was no way to tell whether any photo was going to come out right until you saw it in the Epson screen.

When it does work right, it's pretty easy to use. Place your original on the bed, tell it to scan, look at your result, then save it to your file. This was the case maybe half the time using our old PC and its operating system. Now that we have moved onto Vista Premium, looks like we're going to have to buy a new scanner. The concept of "plug and play" really doesn't work with this thing. Software is complicated and the machine only works exactly right half the time. And, as the other reviewer said, you can't make a PDF from it.

A workhorse of a scanner -- 2009-06-20
This was my first scanner and I sure did enjoy having it. However, I am operating it in the Windows Vista in an odd way. I may not be installing a driver right, but I am scanning in the Vista, just in a jackleg way. This scanner does not do PDFs, which is the reason I need to upgrade.

Mostly what I did was scan photos, nice clear, colorful. I like the steps it took to get a simple photo scanned. The scanner feature is the EPSON Smart Panel. It will Scan to Email, Scan to Files, COPY, Scan to OCR, Scan to Application, Scan for Creativity, Scan to Web, and Photo Print.

What I like with the simplicity of the steps, not clouded with excessive features the average person won't know about. The instruction booklet is great, well defined instructions, illustrations, and even shows how to work with certain image problems. The scanner comes with a film hold and slide holder.

As I said, before you purchase you made need to find out if it is compatible with Windows Vista. I couldn't get it to work on my new computer with Vista. Otherwise, it is a great scanner. ...Rizzo
